05.04.10 | Internships help students land jobs

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

If you ask anyone who has landed a job right out of college how they did it, they will likely tell you that they completed an internship during their college career. In a competitive job market, internships are a crucial part of helping college graduates land their first job. Internships provide students experience and insight into their future career and help them determine what they would like out of their ideal job.

In a lot of ways internships are no different than part time jobs. Interns are expected to show up at their place of employment on a regular schedule determined by the student and their internship supervisor. Holding an internship requires a great amount of maturity and discipline. When a student successfully completes an internship it shows future employers that they are responsible and ready to positively contribute to an organization.

There are a number of benefits to engaging in internship work. First, they help students build up their resumes with hands-on real-world experience. This is helpful because most employers look for candidates with a significant amount of experience to fill even their entry-level positions.

Most internships are either paid or completed for school credit. Either way they are usually not volunteer work. Paid internships allow students to earn extra money to cover college expenses. Many students use the money they earn from their internship to buy textbooks, cover their meal plan and even pay down student loans. Internships for credit are completed in place of a class. A faculty member usually oversees these internships and students are often required to keep a journal of their experiences and write a final paper. The ideal internship is both paid and completed for credit.

Internships are a very good idea. They help you network, gain work experience, and possibly even get a future job with that company. Definately try to get one!

I would pay off all 4 years of loans in college and tuition, give back to my mom for raising me and helping me out with money when she can,put about 10,000 in savings and if a good amount is left over, go to a few good concerts VIP and take 2 out of country trips.
