05.11.10 | Internships help students land jobs: part 2

Posted in News by Kristin Morris

In case you missed part one it can be found here!

Internships can be completed at any point during a student’s four years of college, but typically they are reserved for the junior and senior years. Internships vary greatly in length. Some students take on internships that last for an entire academic year while others are completed over summer or winter break. Many internships, like college classes, are run on a semester basis. There is no right or wrong time to complete an internship. In fact, it is a good idea to take internships as opportunities arise.

Many students have the desire to take on an internship, but do not know where to begin their search. It is true that internships can be difficult to find, but usually not as difficult as full-time employment. Students looking for internships should begin their search within their personal network. Family is a great group of people to start with. Parents and siblings often have strong connections within their own companies and can recommend interns. From there family members and family friends can use their own networks to help in the search.

Another popular place for students to look for internships is at their school’s career services office. When college alumni have internship positions at their companies they usually go to their alma mater to search for candidates.

Students can also search for internships in their desired field online. One great online resource is Internships.com. Internships.com is the Internet’s largest searchable internship database. Students can use Internships.com to figure out what types of internships suite them best, find an internship in their desired field and build a resume that will impress future employers.

When it comes to getting a job in the real world, grades, school activities and volunteer work only take students so far. These days employers need to see more. Professional work experience before graduation is a qualification that cannot be rivaled. With a solid internship resume a student has a great chance of being employed after they receive their diploma.

05.04.10 | Internships help students land jobs

Posted in News by Kristin Morris

If you ask anyone who has landed a job right out of college how they did it, they will likely tell you that they completed an internship during their college career. In a competitive job market, internships are a crucial part of helping college graduates land their first job. Internships provide students experience and insight into their future career and help them determine what they would like out of their ideal job.

In a lot of ways internships are no different than part time jobs. Interns are expected to show up at their place of employment on a regular schedule determined by the student and their internship supervisor. Holding an internship requires a great amount of maturity and discipline. When a student successfully completes an internship it shows future employers that they are responsible and ready to positively contribute to an organization.

There are a number of benefits to engaging in internship work. First, they help students build up their resumes with hands-on real-world experience. This is helpful because most employers look for candidates with a significant amount of experience to fill even their entry-level positions.

Most internships are either paid or completed for school credit. Either way they are usually not volunteer work. Paid internships allow students to earn extra money to cover college expenses. Many students use the money they earn from their internship to buy textbooks, cover their meal plan and even pay down student loans. Internships for credit are completed in place of a class. A faculty member usually oversees these internships and students are often required to keep a journal of their experiences and write a final paper. The ideal internship is both paid and completed for credit.

04.02.10 | Using Your Summer Break to Search for Scholarships Part 1

Posted in News by Kristin Morris

For college students, summer vacation is well known as a time to see old friends, relax and recharge, and make money for the upcoming school year. Most students use this time to completely forget about the stresses of college life, but others use summer break as a time to do some of the college-related activities generally set aside during the academic year. Searching for scholarships is one of those activities.

If you are, or have ever been, a college student, you know how crazy a schedule can get with classes, papers, exams, and other activities. Even thinking about applying for scholarships is usually out of the question. With more free time than at any other point in the school year, summer break gives students a great opportunity to search and apply for scholarships. Scholarship searching can be extremely time consuming, but spreading the process out over an entire summer will make it much less overwhelming.

No one should have to make searching for scholarships a full time job during their summer vacation, but here are a few ways to make the most of your summer scholarship search:

1: Set aside some time each day: If you spend an hour a day searching for scholarships, that is seven hours a week and as many as 100 hours total for the summer. Just think about how many applications you could submit in that amount of time!

2: Submit only high quality applications: Take your time on applications and make sure you have all of your application pieces (essays, transcript etc.) together before you submit it. Do not waste your time submitting an application that you are not confident about.

3: Use your community resources:
The Internet is not the only place to search for scholarships. There could be thousands of dollars worth of scholarships in your back yard. Many town organizations, churches and businesses give out scholarships every year. Use your summer vacation go make connections with these groups.

Stay tuned for part 2 to learn what else you can do to maximize your summer scholarship search!

Rotary InternationalDid you know that there could be thousands of dollars in scholarships right in your own community? • Your church – many churches give out one or two scholarships to active members.
  • Your local Rotary club – Rotary clubs often award scholarships to students for excellence in academics, community service and other activities.
  • Your summer job – many local businesses give out scholarships to their student employees.
  • Any organizations your parents are involved in – often times organizations will give scholarships to people they know so if your parents are involved that is a plus.
