12.13.11 | College Programs for Students with Disabilities

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

A recent article in Education Week talks about the fact that more students with disabilities are going to college after high school. Up until recently, there hasn’t been a lot of postsecondary options for students with intellectual impairments. Now, many schools are opening their doors to this group of students with specialized programs.

These programs are sprouting up on campuses across the country. Over the last 10 years the number of schools with programs for students with disabilities has grown from about 15 in 2002 to almost 170 now.  Vanderbilt University and George Mason University are just two well-know schools that have put programs in place.

The article mentions that these programs are sometimes even more rigorous than a traditional college programs. In addition to carrying a heavy course-load, these students are responsible for exercising for a certain number of hours every week, keeping journals of their experiences, and taking turns shopping and cooking for their peers. This kind of program not only teaches academics, but also important life skills.

What do you think about programs like this? Do you or anyone you know have experience with this kind of program? Leave a comment to let us know what you think!
