According to a recent article in US News and World Report, more students are applying to college early than ever before. The article states that out of all students who filled out the Common Application last year, nearly 49 percent applied for some form of an early program.
There are many different kinds of early applications. Early action usually allows you to apply and find out if you are accepted early, but does not necessarily require that you attend the school. Early decision on the other hand is usually binding. If you apply early decision and are accepted, you are usually required to attend. The rules and guidelines of early programs vary from school to school, but the basic principal is the same; you hear from colleges earlier than traditional applicants.
There are definitely pros and cons of applying early. Many students choose to apply early because it shows their number one school that they are serious about attending. Student who are lucky enough to be accepted early can usually use the rest of their senior year to concentrate on other things like finishing high school with good grades and applying for scholarships. Other student shy away from early decision because once you are in there is no turning back. For many students the deadlines are too early for them to feel confident in their decision.
