09.26.11 | Colleges Want Students with Cash

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

A recent article in Time Moneyland uncovered a harsh reality about higher education. When it comes to the college admissions process many schools care more about money than they do about well-rounded, quality applicants.  According to the article, many American universities admit that they are actively trying to recruit students who do not need financial aid and can pay full, non-discounted tuition. These students are not always as academically qualified as other applicants, but because they can pay in full, they are much more valuable.

The article also states that admissions directors across the country say that finding students who can pay in full for their education is a higher priority than figuring out ways to provide financial aid to low-income applicants. Additionally, they are making a big push to admit out-of-state and international students who both tent to pay a lot more for their education than local students.

Leave a comment to tell us what you think about this. Is this right? Do you think it is fair that wealthier students are being accepted to colleges over more qualified students?

09.19.11 | Early Decision: Is it the right choice?

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

According to a recent article in US News and World Report, more students are applying to college early than ever before. The article states that out of all students who filled out the Common Application last year, nearly 49 percent applied for some form of an early program.

There are many different kinds of early applications. Early action usually allows you to apply and find out if you are accepted early, but does not necessarily require that you attend the school. Early decision on the other hand is usually binding. If you apply early decision and are accepted, you are usually required to attend. The rules and guidelines of early programs vary from school to school, but the basic principal is the same; you hear from colleges earlier than traditional applicants.

There are definitely pros and cons of applying early. Many students choose to apply early because it shows their number one school that they are serious about attending. Student who are lucky enough to be accepted early can usually use the rest of their senior year to concentrate on other things like finishing high school with good grades and applying for scholarships. Other student shy away from early decision because once you are in there is no turning back. For many students the deadlines are too early for them to feel confident in their decision.

Share your experiences with us! Leave a comment and let us know if you are planning on applying early decision to college? Or, if you are already in college, did you apply early decision and how has it worked out?
