03.31.11 | New Scholarships Alert for 3/31/11

Posted in New Scholarships by Scholarship Guru

Happy last day of March everyone! As promised, here are a few more scholarship opportunities for you to check out…

First off, I know everyone is very busy this time of year, so another essay isn’t the most welcome. However, this one at least seems interesting. The Big Dig Scholarship from AntiqueTrader.tv offers a $500 scholarship for the best essay, but what is it on? For the essay, students must think of an object, that if dug up 200 years from now, will be worth a lot of money. The essay needs to be between 500-1000 words and explain why you picked the item, why do you think it will have value, etc. This scholarship is open to current HS seniors as well as current freshmen and sophomores and the application deadline is June 1, 2011.

Next we have the RTDNA (Radio Television Digital News Association) scholarships. RTDNA offers 2 different scholarship programs, one is for undergraduate students (freshmen excluded) and the other is for current grad students (or students about to enroll in a graduate program). Each program consists of a bunch of scholarship awards ranging in amount, but all are indented for students pursing a career in digital journalism. The program overall is offering over $25,000 worth of scholarships to eligible students. To apply, you must submit an online application form by Friday, May 13 along with letters of recommendation.

The St. Simon Publishing Scholarship involves another essay, but luckily, the deadline is not until August 31, 2011 so you can take all summer to write and perfect your essay! The scholarship itself is $500 and open to students in need of financial assistance to pay for books. The essay you must write is based on the book Two Different Worlds: The Possibilities And The Realities (yes, this scholarship does involve reading the book).

Hopefully one of these scholarships will apply to you, but if not, leave a comment to let us know what types of scholarships you’d like to see in the future!

Happy scholarship searching!

QUINCY, MA (March 28, 2011) – The popular student scholarship reward website ScholarshipPoints.com recently announced the winners of their Scholarship Idol viral video contest. In 60 seconds or less, students were given the chance to express themselves creatively and originally in a video and upload it to the ScholarshipPoints YouTube channel (http://www.youtube.com/ScholarshipPoints). The number of “Likes” a video received determined it’s chances of landing in the top ten videos to be judged by members at ScholarshipPoints.com during the final round.

Of the more than 50,000 votes cast, the majority went to Erika Vasallo, a vocal performance major at Florida State University. Erika walked away with a $1,000 scholarship and a Flip™ UltraHD video camera. “With the rising costs of college tuition, room and board, and books, the $1,000 scholarship that I won from ScholarshipPoints.com will help me get a head start on my education, said Vasallo. “Thank you ScholarshipPoints for your generous scholarship!”

Jonathan Thomas, a business student with a passion for film, was one of the runners-up in the competition. He was also the recipient of a video camera. “I love film. Happy St. Patrick’s Day to all you students out there! So that you may find some financial luck today, here are a few more scholarships to help you on the road to paying for school.

In keeping with the St. Patty’s Day theme, Castle Ink is offering a scholarship for going green! The purpose of this scholarship is to raise awareness of recycling and is open to both high school and college students enrolled in college for the 2011-2012 academic year. Here’s how it works: students write something about recycling, size doesn’t matter. Then, post it somewhere online and send as many people as you can to visit the page! it’s that easy! The student who generates the most visits will be awarded a $2,500 dollar scholarship! Oh yeah, the deadline is May 30, 2011.

It seems that with the plethora of scholarships for women and minorities, white males can fall through the cracks, or so thought the founder of this next scholarship. The FMAFE (Former Majority Association for Equality) Scholarship is only open to white male students planning to attend college for the fall 2011 semester. Five students will be awarded one $500 scholarship each, and providing they keep their GPA above 3.0, students can qualify for aid for following semesters.

And for all of you non-Irish folk out there, check out the Xerox Technical Minority Scholarship Program. This scholarship is available to minority students who are enrolled in a technical degree program (Bachelor’s or higher). Each year Xerox awards $1,000 – $10,000 to qualified students, and you have until September 30, 2011 to submit your application!

03.03.11 | New Scholarships Alert

Posted in New Scholarships by Scholarship Guru

Hello scholarship seekers! I’m back to tell you all about some new scholarship opportunities. Let’s get started…

First up, Discus Awards is a scholarship program that awards students for their well-roundedness. You can either nominate yourself or someone you know for a scholarship based on 3 areas where you (or they) shine.  You can then write a little bit about why you stand out or even upload a video to make your case. With many scholarships that focus on one passion or stand-out aspect, the Discus Awards honors unconventional, all-around students. A new winner is named every month and students who are chosen will receive a $2,000 college scholarship.

Learn more about the Discus Awards.

Another great scholarship opportunity is brought to you by Nordstrom (yup, the department store). Every year they give students $10,000 in scholarships to be dispersed evenly over your 4 years of college. Unfortunately it is only open to high school juniors and winners are obligated to maintain a GPA of at least 2.7 thought their 4 years in college. The application period begins March 15, 2011 and ends May 16, 2011.

Lastly, the Diabetes Scholars Foundation provides a number of scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $5,000. Students diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes who have contributed to awareness or research efforts through fundraising, volunteering or public speaking are encouraged to apply.

That’s all for now, check back in a couple weeks for more scholarship updates!
