12.23.10 | New Scholarships Alert

Posted in New Scholarships by Kristin Ferguson

Hi there scholarship seekers. Hope you are all enjoying your winter break! The time between semesters is a great opportunity to start applications for scholarships that have spring deadlines. Today I have a few scholarships to share to help you get started.

The first scholarship I would like to tell you about is the Diverse Minds Youth Writing Challenge. This is an education awareness initiative offered by B’nai B’rith International as one of its programs that promote tolerance and communicate a message of equality among all citizens, regardless of race, religion, national origin, gender or sexual orientation. This scholarship competition asks high school students to write and illustrate a children’s book that discusses the topics of tolerance and diversity. The challenge encourages teens to create innovative ways to teach tolerance to young children, as well as gain new insights into these issues for themselves.

The second scholarship I have for you comes from the Phoenix Akarama Foundation. This foundation offers undergraduate scholarships to deserving female high school seniors and community college students each year. Scholarships are awarded based on academic achievement, campus involvement, community service and leadership.

The final scholarship program I have for you today is the Hawaii Community Foundation Scholarship Program. This program consists of over 150 scholarship funds established by generous individuals, families, businesses or organizations to assist Hawaii’s residents in obtaining a college education. Some if the funds are part of the Hawaii Community Foundation and some represent private foundations that have asked the Hawaii Community Foundation to administer their scholarships. Students apply to the program and, if eligible, can be awarded from one or more of these funds.

That is all for today. Don’t forget we have another round of our own scholarship drawings coming up on January 3rd! Login to ScholarshipPoints now and redeem the code SCHOLARSHIPSIN11 for 15 scholarship points.  Hope everyone had a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year!

12.09.10 | The College Scholarship Essay

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

No one ever said that applying for scholarships was easy. College scholarship money is abundant, but that does not mean you do not have to work hard to get your share. Many scholarships require an essay be submitted with the application. With the holiday break right around the corner, it may a good time to start thinking about spending some of your time off searching for scholarships and  plowing through the essays that have been put off throughout the busy semester.

Time and effort are certainly required to write a successful scholarship essay.  But how do you know the finished product you are submitting puts your best foot forward? Here are quick tips that will lead you in the right direction and make sure you are using your writing time wisely and efficiently:

  • Use an original topic: Think outside of the box when it comes to developing a topic. Unique essays will shine in a large pool of applicants.
  • Use all of the writing skills you have learned in high school: It is important to treat every essay like a piece of writing you would turn in for English class. Use every writing tip you have learned from having a strong theme to proper sentence construction.
  • Give a scholarship essay the same attention you would give a college admission essay: This essay will not determine whether or not you get into college, but it could certainly help you pay for your education.
  • Proofread and spell-check your work: Spelling and grammar mistakes can lead a scholarship committee to immediately dismissing your essay as a contender.
  • Have a parent or friend give it a second look: It never hurts to have another person take a look at something you have written. It is easy to miss small mistakes that someone else could have picked up on.

If you follow all of these steps you should have a piece of work you can be really proud of turning in. It may seem like a lot of work, but every scholarship you apply for will bring you one step close to paying for college with scholarships.
