10.28.10 | Financing a College Education

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

College scholarships are one of the most convenient ways to pay for your education. Unlike student loans, college scholarships do not need to be repaid. Though college scholarships are not guaranteed to everyone, there are tons of scholarship opportunities for every student to apply for.

Finding the right scholarships often takes an extensive amount of searching. Luckily there are a lot of resources both online and in your community to help you find college scholarship money. A few places to find scholarships include local organizations such as churches and small businesses, free college scholarship websites like ScholarshipPoints.com, your college or university financial aid office, and online scholarship search engines such as StudentScholarshipSearch.com.

Some students are awarded scholarships based on financial need. When you file your FAFSA to apply for financial aid with your college or university, you receive a financial aid package detailing the awards you are eligible for. If you are lucky, scholarships are one form of college financial aid that might be included in your financial aid package.

Scholarships are also awarded based on other criteria. There are scholarships for seniors, scholarships for athletes, scholarships for women, scholarships for tall people and scholarships for musicians just to name a few. Applying for these more specific scholarships can be beneficial because the applicant pools are often smaller which makes them less competitive.

10.20.10 | Paying for College With Scholarships

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

Finding scholarships can be a daunting task. Because of this, students often wonder if paying for college with scholarships is even possible. With so many different kinds of scholarships out there it can be difficult to figure out where to find the right ones and how to approach the application processes. To break through some of the clutter, ScholarshipPoints has recently added some new resources about various types of scholarships, where they can be found, and who should apply for them.

One group of students that is always looking for scholarships is nursing students. Nursing scholarships are abundant and are awarded by schools, hospitals and private organizations. Nursing scholarships are available to both students at the undergraduate and graduate levels.

International scholarships are highly coveted by both US students looking to study abroad and foreign students looking to study in the US. This type of scholarship makes it easier for students to study outside of their country of origin. Many organizations see great value in study abroad and therefore dedicate money to international scholarship funds.

Merit scholarships are reserved for students who excel academically. These scholarships aim to take some of the financial pressure off of outstanding students and give them opportunities that they might not otherwise have. Merit scholarships are awarded to both high school and college students.

Finally, the term “weird scholarships” isĀ  often used to describe the group of scholarships that cannot easily be categorized. Not all scholarships are reserved for star athletes and valedictorians. There are scholarships for students who are tall, students who play the tuba, and students affiliated with a particular interest or cause.

We hope that our resources provide some insight into the scholarship world and encourage students to search and apply for scholarships that meet their qualifications and needs.
