05.11.10 | Internships help students land jobs: part 2

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

In case you missed part one it can be found here!

Internships can be completed at any point during a student’s four years of college, but typically they are reserved for the junior and senior years. Internships vary greatly in length. Some students take on internships that last for an entire academic year while others are completed over summer or winter break. Many internships, like college classes, are run on a semester basis. There is no right or wrong time to complete an internship. In fact, it is a good idea to take internships as opportunities arise.

Many students have the desire to take on an internship, but do not know where to begin their search. It is true that internships can be difficult to find, but usually not as difficult as full-time employment. Students looking for internships should begin their search within their personal network. Family is a great group of people to start with. Parents and siblings often have strong connections within their own companies and can recommend interns. From there family members and family friends can use their own networks to help in the search.

Another popular place for students to look for internships is at their school’s career services office. When college alumni have internship positions at their companies they usually go to their alma mater to search for candidates.

Students can also search for internships in their desired field online. One great online resource is Internships.com. Internships.com is the Internet’s largest searchable internship database. Students can use Internships.com to figure out what types of internships suite them best, find an internship in their desired field and build a resume that will impress future employers.

When it comes to getting a job in the real world, grades, school activities and volunteer work only take students so far. These days employers need to see more. Professional work experience before graduation is a qualification that cannot be rivaled. With a solid internship resume a student has a great chance of being employed after they receive their diploma.

05.04.10 | Internships help students land jobs

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

If you ask anyone who has landed a job right out of college how they did it, they will likely tell you that they completed an internship during their college career. In a competitive job market, internships are a crucial part of helping college graduates land their first job. Internships provide students experience and insight into their future career and help them determine what they would like out of their ideal job.

In a lot of ways internships are no different than part time jobs. Interns are expected to show up at their place of employment on a regular schedule determined by the student and their internship supervisor. Holding an internship requires a great amount of maturity and discipline. When a student successfully completes an internship it shows future employers that they are responsible and ready to positively contribute to an organization.

There are a number of benefits to engaging in internship work. First, they help students build up their resumes with hands-on real-world experience. This is helpful because most employers look for candidates with a significant amount of experience to fill even their entry-level positions.

Most internships are either paid or completed for school credit. Either way they are usually not volunteer work. Paid internships allow students to earn extra money to cover college expenses. Many students use the money they earn from their internship to buy textbooks, cover their meal plan and even pay down student loans. Internships for credit are completed in place of a class. A faculty member usually oversees these internships and students are often required to keep a journal of their experiences and write a final paper. The ideal internship is both paid and completed for credit.
