02.17.10 | A Little Scholarship Secret

Posted in News by Kristin Ferguson

Rotary InternationalDid you know that there could be thousands of dollars in scholarships right in your own community? Many students search for scholarships online and apply for national contests, but these contests can have hundreds of thousands of applicants. Local scholarships have much smaller applicant pools so the chances of winning are much greater. So where can you find these scholarships? Here is a list of places to look:

  • Your high school’s guidance department – sometimes your high school will have an entire list of community scholarships.
  • Your church – many churches give out one or two scholarships to active members.
  • Your local Rotary club – Rotary clubs often award scholarships to students for excellence in academics, community service and other activities.
  • Your summer job – many local businesses give out scholarships to their student employees.
  • Any organizations your parents are involved in – often times organizations will give scholarships to people they know so if your parents are involved that is a plus.

Now is the time when most local organizations are collecting applications and making decisions about award winners so do not delay the application process! Good luck and don’t forget about the ScholarshipPoints March 2010 $10,000 scholarship drawing! You have about a month left to earn points and enter to win!

StudentChefsHello once again scholarship seekers! I am here to give you you weekly New Scholarships Alert! They are all great this week. Not everyone will qualify for all of my recommendations, but keep reading to see if they are for you!

The first scholarship comes from The Ulman Cancer Fund For Young Adults. This organization is committed to helping young adults continue their education after being affected by cancer through their own diagnosis or the diagnosis of a loved one. The scholarships they are awarding are worth up to $2,500.

The second scholarship is for aspiring chefs and comes from the IRL Arts Foundation. The IRL Arts Foundation provides five gifted graduating seniors with a $500 cash gift towards tuition in a degree in the culinary arts. This scholarship process is a bit different than others in the culinary world and requires all applicants to submit a video! Videos are graded on a curve and account for 50% of the decision. The other 50% will depend on such factors as grade point average, extracurricular activities, letters of recommendation, financial need and work experience.

The final scholarship I have to tell you about this week is for students interested in pursuing a career in direct or interactive marketing and comes from the Direct Marketing Educational Foundation. These scholarships vary in award amount and are awarded on a competitive basis.

Thats all for now! I will be back next week with more interesting scholarships for you!

ScholarshipPoints (www.scholarshippoints.com), a free college scholarship rewards program, has reached 750,000 members and will award up to $100,000 in scholarships to college students in 2010.

87605828Quincy, MA February 4, 2010 – This month, ScholarshipPoints (www.scholarshippoints.com), an Edvisors online education company, reached a membership of 750,000 college students. This milestone comes just three months after surpassing half a million members. Through the free scholarships program, ScholarshipPoints will help students of all ages achieve their dreams of a college education by giving away up to $100,000 in 2010. To ensure funds are used for educational purposes, awards are sent directly to the student’s financial aid office.

Participation in the college scholarship rewards program is free and students can win just by becoming members. Students increase their chances of winning by earning points, called scholarship points, and entering them into monthly drawings for free scholarships. Members earn points by taking surveys, reading blog posts about paying for and saving money while in college, and completing other engaging activities.

By giving away over $75,000 in 2009 and a projected $100,000 in 2010, ScholarshipPoints is making strides towards alleviating some of the financial burden that comes with paying for college. “It is exciting to see the ScholarshipPoints program growing so quickly,” said Joe Cronin, CEO of Edvisors. “The more members we have actively participating in our site the more scholarship money we will be able to give away in the future.”

In addition to giving away scholarship money, ScholarshipPoints.com strives to connect students to partner scholarship programs, financial aid help and advice, and study abroad travel opportunities.

The next $10,000 scholarship winner will be drawn on March 15. Interested students should join at www.ScholarshipPoints.com/10K/ by March 14, 2010 to become eligible for this and other monthly scholarship giveaways.
